Thank you for visiting my website! I live in Sebastopol California and as you can see I specialize in photographing birds of prey, primarily falcons and eagles. My passion started in high school after I read John and Frank Craighead's book "Hawks in the Hand" and I became interested in both falconry and wildlife photography. While no longer a falconer, my love for raptors has never diminished. Not content with images of captive birds or staged imagery which is prevalent today, I became a student of nature which has led to the images you see here.
My work has been published in National Wildlife, Audubon and Living Bird Magazines, numerous newspapers and books, both in the United States and Europe. Other clients include the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the USDA, the Peregrine Fund and even the Grateful Dead! My video the "Starling and Falcon Dance" won first prize in the video category of 2017 Windland Smith Rice, Nature's Best Photography contest and can be seen here on my website and at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History through September 2018. Other awards include winning images in two National Wildlife's Photo Contests. You will find many of my images on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "Birds of North America" website, the Raptor Research Foundation website, the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group website, the London Peregrine Partnership website and Coastal Raptors website.
In 2008 I worked with two good friends, Kate Davis and Rob Palmer, to publish the book "Falcons of North America". In 2011, the three of us published another book titled "Raptors of the West" which won honors for Artistic Merit and Design from the National Outdoor Book Awards and the Montana Book of the Year!
