My first image of the year. This male was banded 8 years ago at a nearby eyrie. I photographed him back then catching butterflies which he loved eating.

Female in flight 1

The image shows the clean plumage of the female falcon. The next two images show a different female in heavy molt which flew by.

Floater female falcon 1

This molting female falcon came through the territory and was chased away by momma. This bird was in a heavy molt and had some interesting coloration as can be seen in this image and the next. The term “floater” indicates an unattached bird which occupies a significant place in the population that can fill-in or take over another’s place. They are the result of more adult birds than acceptable nest sites.
