When making these photographs I hope to get the falcon "shape" in the image like this with its sickle, long wing posture displayed.

Fire in the Sky: Evening Attack

Thousands of starlings in the sky above a roost site react to attacking peregrine falcons. The dark areas tell me that is where the falcons are.

I would guess there are least two peregrines up there attacking the starlings. Note the two dark areas. That's where the falcons are.

Evening Attack

I saw this starling flock racing home and saw the falcon in the distance coming in. So I drove quickly, then ran into a field ahead of them to get this image. To get these shots, it's all about anticipating behavior. The camera is secondary. This is one of favorite images and sits on my wall.
